| BROCKMAN REBOUNDS TO SCORE GAME-WINNER |
BY TODD DYBAS / SEATTLESPORTSONLINE.COM It had been a wayward Mikan drill for Jon Brockman in the second half. The Washington power forward tried in close from the left side, then the right, then the left. He would grab his own missed shot only to put up another errant attempt. Brockman started the second half 0-for-6 from the floor. But to close a ferocious Pac-10 home opener for the Huskies, Brockman grabbed an offensive rebound and laid the ball back in with five seconds left. That basket elevated Washington's winning streak to nine and sent Stanford off to Pullman with an 84-83 loss Thursday night in front of a frenzied 9,291. Down a point with 11 seconds left, Washington coach Lorenzo Romar drew up a play to isolate Quincy Pondexter. Washington (11-3, 2-0) inbounded the ball to Pondexter who drove and was cut off. Pondexter dumped it to Matthew Bryan-Amaning, who leaned in and shot. His miss came to Brockman, the senior hitting his first game-winner since an 80 foot heave that beat Mount Vernon at the buzzer when Brockman playing for Snohomish High School. "That play seemed to take about 30 minutes," Brockman said. "The ball was in the air forever. I saw Matt taking a shot from the right. I just had a feeling it was going to come off the backside. I wedged myself in, luckily it came right to me." Deferred ego is a Brockman staple, but luck had little to do with it. After Pondexter and Bryan-Amaning moved into the lane, Stanford forward Josh Owens left Brockman to help. Brockman, who finished with 18 rebounds, 12 offensive, looped under the basket to the left side and waited. Ball game. Sort of. There were still 4.6 seconds left, Stanford needing to travel the length of the court. The Cardinal (11-2) threw a long pass to Landry Fields, who was streaking over the midcourt line toward Stanford's basket. Washington's Justin Holiday trailed Fields on the play. Defensively, Washington was planning to switch any time necessary during the inbounds attempt. Holiday became a little mixed up, then had to recover to track the loose Fields. "I knew I had to run and just get my hand up," Holiday said. "I was on his hip with my hand straight up. Once he got the ball, I got around him and Quincy came, and I thought we were fine. "From the outside it might look like a little scare." Fields dribbled the ball, apparently off himself, and it went out of bounds. Washington then inbounded to Justin Dentmon who fired the ball in the air to run out the clock. Washington hammered Stanford on the glass, outrebounding the Cardinal 44-28. Washington had 23 offensive rebounds, Stanford nine. In a one-point win, not be overlooked is Pondexter making all six of his free throws and Bryan-Amaning going 7-for-10 at the free-throw line. Pondexter came into the game shooting 56 percent from the line, Bryan-Amaning 52 percent. The boisterous crowd and high intensity were no surprise to the Cardinal. Especially senior leader and Seattle native Mitch Johnson. "It's going to be a war, we knew that going in," Johnson said following extended postgame goodbyes that made him late for the team bus. "At times I think we did a good job of meeting that challenge, and at times I don't think we did. I think that was kind of the deciding factor of the game." Stanford built an eight-point lead in the second half, up 59-51 with 15:56 remaining. A spurt by the Huskies cut the lead to three. A 3-pointer by Justin Dentmon with 9:33 left gave Washington the lead back, preceding the nip-and-tuck affair in the final minutes. Washington had four scorers in double figures, Brockman leading the way with 19 points. Isaiah Thomas had another strong showing, finishing with 18, Bryan-Amaning contributed 17, and Pondexter 14. Washington hosts Cal Saturday at 3 p.m., the Golden Bears 14-3, 3-0 in the Pac-10, after a 57-50 win at Washington State Thursday night. Notes: Freshman guard Elston Turner missed his second consecutive game because of a sprained left ankle. Turner has been using a stationary bike and done light jogging, though he has not played full court in practice. Turner said there is better than a 50 percent chance he will play Saturday. ... Brockman became the first Washington player to have more than 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds. Todd Dybas is the editor of Seattlesportsonline.com.
